1 Reason Why Evil Morty Isn't Rick's Original Morty (And 5 Why He Is)

5. Why He Is - Rick's Memories

Rick And Morty Evil Morty
Adult Swim

This is perhaps the biggest indicator that something isn't right with Rick C137's backstory.

When Rick is tied to the table and he and Evil Rick (Evil Morty) are talking about themselves, we see some of the memories that Rick has in his head - one of which shows us Rick picking up Baby Morty.

This is a huge moment because Rick's whole backstory is that he has been gone for 20 years and only a year before the events of the show has he come back to live with the Smith family. So, how would he have ever met Baby Morty? This is something that directly contradicts everything we know about C137 in the show since it's proof that he has been lying about something to do with Morty.

While Rick's travels in time could explain away him meeting a Baby Morty somewhere, it wouldn't explain the other moment that reveals Rick's true feelings towards his Morty. That is that he is shown to be crying whilst looking at the memory.

Cut to another episode of the show - The Rickshank Redemption - where, whilst in a Mexican stand-off with one Rick of the Council of Ricks, Council Rick tells C137 that he is a renegade Rick, that he is emotional toward his grandchildren.

Cut back to the table and it makes sense. Rick had raised a Morty to not have any of the nervousness that Jerry has in him, to be a great, clever being, only for that Morty to eventually rebel and cause problems. However, upon seeing those memories, Rick C137 cries at the memory of his original Morty.

This all has the feeling of an endgame somewhere, where we'll find out once and for all who the Evil Morty really is.
