Actors don't get more statuesque or iconic than John Wayne, one of the most recognisable stars in the history of Hollywood, and one who surely couldn't go far without being noticed.

Though Wayne is of course best known for his legendary big-screen work, he did also make a fleeting cameo appearance in the 1950s-1960s western TV series Wagon Train.

The season four episode "The Colter Craven Story" was directed by Wayne's regular collaborator John Ford, who had also directed the 1950 movie on which Wagon Train was based, Wagon Master.

Wayne couldn't resist the urge to take a role in the episode, playing General William Tecumseh Sherman, but doing so under the literal cover of night by appearing only in low-light while rocking a fake beard, rendering his face barely visible.

Wayne was also credited under the name "Michael Morris," in reference to his real name Marion Robert Morrison, and so the only real way to tell it's the actor at all is from his distinctive vocal drawl.
