10 Actors Who Recently Nailed Great TV Performances
1. Michael Keaton - Dopesick (Hulu)
One of the best things about being a movie fan in the last few years has been the resurgence in Michael Keaton's career - and now it's one of the best things about watching TV.
Keaton began his career as playing the pugnacious smartass with a heart of gold in a host of otherwise forgettable comedies (think Bill Murray with an anger management problem). Following his transition to serious dramatic work in the late eighties, Tim Burton cast him as Bruce Wayne in his Batman movie, elevating him to superstardom.
Keaton carried on doing great work in good movies after leaving the Batman franchise, but it's the subtle, perfectly judged grace notes of his recent performances that have seen his star rise once more, none more so than in Danny Strong's marvellous yet harrowing drama for Hulu, Dopesick.
A hefty, Big Drama look at the impact of the American opioid crisis on real people, Dopesick is both grounded and elevated by the performances of its cast, which gives the storytelling an intimate, personal feeling that allows it to transcend the issues it brings to the screen. Keaton is the biggest name in the cast, but surrounded by talent equal to his stature, so it says something that his raw, honest, powerful performance is the one that stays with you the longest.
Deeply moving to watch from the comfort of your living room, Keaton's role meant something deeply moving to him too - his nephew was lost to the family due to his own drug addiction, and the actor broke down in tears when accepting his Screen Actor's Guild award.
