10 Actors Who Recently Nailed Great TV Performances

8. James Wolk - Ordinary Joe (NBC)

A strange one, this - because NBC's Ordinary Joe only received middling reviews during its short run on the network, and was cancelled after a single season. Despite this, the central performance(s) from James Wolk attracted significant and justified attention from audiences and critics alike.

Essentially a riff on the unusual conceit of 1998's Gwyneth Paltrow romcom Sliding Doors, Ordinary Joe sees its three-way narrative follow three different versions of Joe Kimbreau after a life-changing decision at his college graduation. In one timeline, Joe pursues his passion for music to become a star; in another, he follows in his father's footsteps to become a cop; in the third, he marries his college girlfriend and ends up becoming a nurse raising a disabled son.

It's a gift for a talented, ambitious actor like Wolk, and he's not slow to accept it. Having developed a reputation for being the best thing on screen in whatever role he plays, Wolk brings a fully realised emotional depth to each of the three versions of Joe that he portrays within each episode, the nuance he brings to the role(s) echoing subtle variation of the colour palettes that characterise each timeline. It's worthwhile watching the show just to see how he does it: extraordinary work.
