10 Actors Who Totally Transformed Themselves For TV Shows

8. Neil Patrick Harris - A Series Of Unfortunate Events

Counter to Naomi Grossman, Neil Patrick Harris is inarguably one of the most famous and recognisable actors working today, best known of course for portraying serial womaniser Barney Stinson on How I Met Your Mother.

Many eyebrows were raised when Harris was cast as the decrepit, grotesque Count Olaf in Netflix's adaptation of A Series of Unfortunate Events, given that his typically suited-up handsomeness couldn't seem more counter to Olaf.

But such is the power of makeup, with Harris reportedly undergoing two-and-a-half hours of work in the makeup chair each day to become Olaf.

Harris' entire face was covered with latex prosthetics which were then airbrushed to give him Olaf's distinctive "weathered" look, and then wispy facial and head hair, as well as that distinctive unibrow, were applied to it. Harris also wore dentures for Olaf's revoltingly dirty teeth.

But the kicker of course is that Olaf dons many, many different disguises throughout the show in an attempt to swindle the Baudelaire children, and so Harris' makeup was rarely ever the same between any two episodes.
