The Wheel of Time premiered on Amazon Prime Video in November to mixed reviews, with a second season currently in production.

However, there was a lot of speculation when Amazon Studios announced they would be recasting a major character for its second season long before the first episode even aired. Barney Harris played Mat Cauthon in the first season but the role will be taken over by Donal Finn in the second run.

The studio didn’t explain why Harris was recast. Barney Harris himself has been mum on the issue too. He deleted all his social media accounts towards the end of 2020, but this hasn't stopped fans from speculating about the reasons behind the recast. Maybe we'll find out someday.

The first season of The Wheel Time only covered the first book of its eponymous 14-book series, so if there was time for a recast, it would be now. Doing it in the middle of a 14-season run would have been far more disruptive.
