10 Actors With Multiple Roles In Doctor Who

1. Karen Gillan

SOOTHSAYER AMY POND
BBC

First Role: Soothsayer (The Fires of Pompeii)

Second Role: Amy Pond (The Eleventh Hour - The Angels Take Manhattan)

The Fires of Pompeii really was a breeding ground for future Who talent wasn't it? This episode wasn't just Peter Capaldi's first foray into the Doctor Who universe - it was Karen Gillan's too.

The actress has a small role in this Tenth Doctor story as a "Soothsayer", with mere seconds of screen time to her name. At least she got some dialogue though: "It has come! As foretold in the prophecy! The box! The blue box!"

Then, she was cast as the Eleventh Doctor's feisty companion Amy Pond, enjoying a successful stint on the show lasting from 2010's The Eleventh Hour, to 2012's The Angels Take Manhattan (plus a brief cameo in 2013's The Time of the Doctor).

Obviously, the two characters are not connected in any way, although Amy did mention that she enjoyed learning about the Romans at school... so make of that what you will.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for over ten years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. In 2022, he took charge of WhoCulture and has grown it into the biggest Doctor Who channel on YouTube, and one of the biggest Doctor Who communities on the web full-stop. He has been writing and video editing since his early teens, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers, off the back of a burning obsession with the Matt Smith era of the show. Like many his age, he first got into Doctor Who with the 2005 revival, but has since gone back and fallen in love with the classic years too. If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order, or to give you a random factoid about the making of Gridlock, Danny is the person to ask!
