10 Alternate Universe Characters That Were Better Than The Original
6. Fionna And Cake
Fionna and Cake are, in essence, the female counterparts of Finn and Jake from Adventure Time. Other than switching genders, the only real difference between them is that Cake is a female cat, rather than a male dog. Apparently cats are more feminine. You would be forgiven for thinking that this would result in an inversion of the shows usual formula, with Fionna and Cake appearing as the helpless damsels in distress. You would be wrong. Fionna and Cake are just as strong and full-on as the original characters, and spend most of their time saving assorted princes from the clutches of the evil Ice Queen.
While the characters appeared in a self-titled episode with no proper introduction, by the end of the episode it became clear that Fionna and Cake's story was actually fan-fiction written by the Ice King. Despite not being real in the world of the show, Fionna and Cake have reappeared in a number of subsequent episodes, each time being the fictional creation of another character. More recently, however, it was revealed that the Ice King had a secret shrine to Fionna and Cake, including life-sized ice statues and stacks of fan-fiction. The character confided that he is certain that they really do exist somewhere, and that he will one day find them.
As a result, Fionna and Cake earn extra points for being too meta for most viewers to get their heads around on a first viewing.
