10 Alternate Universe Characters That Were Better Than The Original

5. Ultimate Kitty Pryde

Kitty Pryde was introduced as the youngest recruit of the X-Men in 1980. She spent her first few years as a foil for the older characters, constantly getting into trouble and having to be rescued by her teammates. The character eventually matured to become one of the strongest members of the X-Men.

Ultimate Kitty Pryde was virtually identical to the original in her early appearances. She was significantly younger than her teammates. She was loud, obnoxious, argumentative, and constantly needed rescuing. However, the characters€™ histories diverged after an argument with Professor Xavier ended with Ultimate Kitty€™s resignation from the X-Men. She enrolled in the same high school as Peter Parker and the pair enjoyed a brief romantic and crime-fighting relationship.

Kitty later began operating under the codename Shroud after the US government outlawed mutants. She learned to reverse the flow of her powers, granting her enhanced density rather than intangibility, and became the leader of the X-Men following the Ultimatum event. In this role she took on an army of Nimrod Sentinels, negotiated a peace treaty with President Captain America, founded the mutant Utopia, and took down Galactus single-handed.

While both versions of the character are pretty strong, what sets Ultimate Kitty apart is her independence. Almost all of the original Kitty's abilities and powers are the result of training she has received from others. Ultimate Kitty Pryde had no one to rely on herself and turned out to be even stronger.

With a (nearly) useless degree in English literature and a personal trainer qualification he's never used, Freddie spends his times writing things that he hopes will somehow pay the rent. He's also a former professional singer, and plays the saxophone and ukulele. He's not really used to talking about himself in the third person, and would like to stop now, thanks.
