10 American Dad Episodes That Pissed People Off

2. Surrogate (S4E7)

Like most leading characters in cartoons, Stan Smith has his flaws. The likes of Homer Simpson, Peter Griffin, Rick Sanchez, and BoJack Horseman all have their notable shortcomings, but in season four, one of Stan’s worst traits was on full display.

When Greg and Terry decided they wanted to use in vitro and a surrogate mother to have a baby, Stan all of a sudden had incredibly homophobic principles he would die for. He had struggled to accept that his neighbours were gay years before, but this took things to a whole new level.

He was disgusted with Francine for agreeing to carry their child, and when she born, Stan actually stole her from the hospital. He took Liberty with the intention of getting her to Nebraska, where gay couples have no legal rights, and putting her up for adoption. He even met a lesbian couple along the way, and despite agreeing that they had a wonderful family, he stole their children too.

Ultimately, Stan sees the error of his ways by the end of the episode, but the damage was already done. Greg and Terry didn’t forgive him, (why on Earth would they?), and after watching this episode it is genuinely hard to remember why Stan is so loved as the protagonist of the show.
