10 Anime Series You Only Watch Once

9. Baki

Higurashi When They Cry
Netflix

Baki's merits could have a list all to itself, as the series is far more nuanced than it gets credit for, but that's not the point of this. Rather, this is all about why, for most audience members, the show is a one-round knockout.

Parts one and two involve five death row inmates converging in Japan for an all out death match, while part three deals with an ancient Chinese martial arts tournament. There is no filler, just pure, raw violence.

Disemboweling, maiming, amputation, mutilation, and even more forms of extreme destruction of the human body are regular occurrences in most episodes.

The anime wants you to feel every single injury, and it succeeds in ways that'll have you flinching as though you're the one on the receiving end of the blow. Also, when things break, like bones for instance, the sound effects are enough to make you whimper.

If it's your cup of tea, Baki is a gift that just keeps giving. But if it isn't - which should be clear from the first episode - you'll find yourself questioning the moments in your life that brought to watching a series where an abnormally beefy old man vomits a hand-grenade.
