10 Anime That Are Way Better Than Their Titles Make Them Sound
1. Princess Tutu
Often written off as another in a sea of cutesy magical girl titles, Princess Tutu is probably the best anime the magical girl genre has ever produced. It epitomises the dark roots of German fairy tales, pulling from equally dark ballet plots while masterfully laying out its overarching theme of fighting fate - one that becomes chillingly literal as the story progresses.
Princess Tutu follows the mission of a little duck turned clumsy young girl with the aid of a magical pendant given to her by a creepy, fourth wall breaking storyteller named Drosselmeyer.
She does this to restore the shattered heart shards of a noble prince, who used his heart to lock away a giant monster raven that brought a plague of ravens that murdered many people. Transforming into Princess Tutu, a figure of legend, Duck slowly discovers the inherent tragedy set up for her and all the characters around her by the storyteller who made them.
With beautiful dancing animation, scores taken from classical ballet, and a perfect ending that emotionally compromises fans to this day, Princess Tutu is one of the greatest anime ever put to screen - though many are put off by its "girlish" title.
