10 Anime That Are Way Better Than Their Titles Make Them Sound
9. Chobits
Admittedly a fanservice-filled series full of questionably dressed robot women, which may throw some viewers off, the oddly named Chobits brings the concept of sentient androids to its most heartbreaking conclusions. The silly, pervy shenanigans played for laughs are often overtaken by the story's own wistful, sad storytelling, few AI stories ever holding a candle to its most serious episodes.
Chobits, created by CLAMP (whose works include Cardcaptor Sakura), follows Hideki Motosuwa, who finds a Persocom (a human shaped computer) in the garbage and brings her home, only to realise she has no existing memory data. He names her "Chi", after the only world she can say. While trying to teach her how to read and speak, both Hideki and Chi eventually find out that she's likely connected to the legendary "Chobits", who are Persocom units with free will and independent thought.
While most of the anime follows the protagonists's love story, it's largely framed by the harsher, tragic realities of people falling in love with their robotic companions, one such experience showing a Persocom's memory failing in a manner resembling human Alzheimer's, forcing the man who loved her to reboot her and lose all their experiences together forever.
