10 Anime That Are Way Better Than Their Titles Make Them Sound
8. Romeo X Juliet
If we're being honest, this anime's title just looks like someone labelling a fandom ship, like someone wrote fanfiction of Shakespeare's teenage tragedies and wanted to make sure everyone knew the story was Romeo x Juliet centric.
And while it definitely is a sort of Shakespearean fanfiction, this anime has lot to offer with its excitingly action-packed take on the age-old teen love story and romantic tragedy that mixes sci-fi and fantasy elements seamlessly.
It takes place on the floating capital of Neo-Verona, makes the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets feel like a much more high stakes war, and sets the story of love and heartbreak right in the middle of betrayals, sword-fights, and an underground rebellion. Juliet takes up the sword and cross-dresses to hide her identity in order to take revenge for her massacred family. It's all pretty badass.
With a solid story and fantastic animation, and even a Japanese rendition of "You Raise Me Up" to bookend each episode, this is one of those fantastical sci-fi/fantasy re-imaginings of classics (similar to the sci-fi and mysticism of the Count of Monte Cristo anime) that's definitely worth a watch.
