There's a common trope not just in anime but in storytelling overall, where an awkward boy has a surprising encounter with a cool popular girl, and they set off on an unconventional romance. Usually, it's not going to be anything special, as there's not much you can do with the concept at this point. But, My Dress-Up Darling says, "hold my beer", and gives you something unique.

Gojo is a young man with the unconventional hobby of creating Hina dolls. He's a social outcast at school and feels deep shame for his passion, but a chance encounter with the popular (but geeky as hell) Marin changes that. She reveals a passion for cosplay, and his strange hobby lands him a role as her costume maker.

The series certainly has its fair share of risqué moments, but beneath that is a heart and soul that cannot be ignored. It's an incredibly passionate show that delves deep into the intricacies of cosplay, teaching you so much about the subculture that you have the tools to delve into it yourself.

Plus, the romance between Gojo and Marin is so well executed. They've got great chemistry, which fills the screen with plenty of heartfelt moments. Besides this, the show is also a coming-of-age story that explores powerful themes like social anxiety, gender roles, societal norms and more. Not bad for a goofy cosplay romance.
