10. The Maxx
Based on the Sam Kieth comic, The Maxx appeared on MTV as part of its Oddities show (which originally featured a series called The Head). The series follows the titular hero in the real world as well as in an alternative reality. By day the homeless Maxx huddles in his box and dreams of humiliating evil villains. When he bursts into the colorful netherworld referred to as the Outback, he is a purple-clad superhero and the protector of the Jungle Queen. The Jungle Queen exists in the real world as Julie Winters, a trauma survivor and freelance social worker, as well as Maxxs only friend. Part of the charm of the show is that it's clear that the creators of the series are familiar with how people read the comics; how all the fundamentals and dialogue reach the eye. In this way, The Maxx" is far more imaginative than many cartoons tailored to children. The Maxx only scratched the surface of the comic series, not lasting long enough to properly examine some of its intricacy. Though the show is still ultimately an excellent character-driven fantasy/drama that should be remembered not just for its strong visuals, but for its great writing, a collection of original ideas, and memorable characters. It was haunting, perplexing, and quite excitingas well as truly and utterly strange.
