10 Awesome New TV Shows You Need To Watch

8. True Detective: Night Country

Shogun FX
HBO

Though technically the fourth season of the ongoing True Detective anthology franchise, Night Country feels like an entirely new show thanks to its bold setting change and behind-the-scenes crew shuffle.

The first of the series not to feature insight from mastermind Nic Pizzolatto, Night Country was written and directed by Issa López, who shifted the procedural drama of the show to the snowy plains of Alaska without losing sight of the thrilling air of mystery that has driven the series from day one.

Starring the great Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as detectives on the case of a missing group of scientists in a fictional Alaskan town, the bracing tale may enlist a slow-burn approach to its six 90-minute episodes, but the intricacy with which it crafts its mystery and explores the pasts of its central characters ensures constant, nail-biting attention.

Deeply philosophical with a hint of supernatural threat, Night Country is a character-driven whodunnit that keeps you guessing to the very end, and has more to say about human nature and the nature of violence than any of the show's previous instalments.
