5. Fringe - Olivia Is Living In An Alternative Universe
Coming from Lost mastermind JJ Abrams (more on this controversial creator later), cult series Fringe had more than its fair share of twists throughout its runtime, with the reveals varying in quality though they were at least remarkably plentiful in quantity.
That said, the series did excel when it settled on a truly clever and original shock, and the sci-fi mystery procedural elements borrowed from iconic nineties favourite The X-Files didn’t seem too unoriginal when it came time for these great shocks (although centring the action around a pair of mismatched agents didn’t help with the plagiarism accusations)
Just look at the bombshell dropped in the first season finale, wherein a dramatic shot of the twin towers reveals that—boom—we’ve been on an alternative earth all along.
Kind of like an inverted and less hairy Planet of the Apes, this gobsmacking moment left fans stunned as they realized protagonist Olivia had been living in an alternative reality this entire time, and the twist revealed the series could truly blow away audiences when it wanted to.
