10 Awful Characters From Otherwise Excellent TV Shows

9. Hoyt Fortenberry - True Blood

Hoyt True Blood Almost every fantasy show has its normal character, the person without the superpowers who is stuck in the world of crazy that surrounds them. The Vampire Diaries has Matt and Buffy had Xander, True Blood actually has a few relatively normal characters, but the one that has the undesirable honour of making this list is Hoyt Fortenberry. Hoyt- the best friend of fellow average Joe, Jason Stackhouse- is without doubt the most bland and useless man in the entire town of Bon Temps. As we have already established, the idea of having a normal guy around to ground the show is nothing new, it almost the genres version of the comedy straight man. In this instance however, it just doesn€™t work. The character of Hoyt is a complete downer; a man who for a long time was under the thumb of his overbearing and far more entertaining mother and only grew out of this when he got into a relationship with Jessica. Then comes problem number two, why in the hell would Jessica be interested in this guy? In fairness the show effectively answered this question in later seasons as the eternal virgin Jessica grew older and got bored with Hoyt, but man was that a rough couple of years. He was boring, possessive and towards the end, embarrassingly desperate and as Jessica began to see the world around and met far more interesting people it was baffling that she would stay with him for so long. At least he took the break up like a man€ Oh wait no, he couldn€™t even do that. After begging Jessica to stay with him, he joins a hate group, sucks at that and resorts to having his mind wiped so that he could move on. Not only was he a controlling jerk- who couldn€™t just be happy that he had a couple of years of punching way above his weight- but he had make Jessica go Eternal Sunshine on his arse rather than accept it like a grown up. Not only did Hoyt suffer from the fact that he was a moron, but he wasn€™t even the most entertaining €œnormal€ character. Arlene, Terry and Andy are powerless peop;e and are infinitely more entertaining than Hoyt. Thank God he is gone and here€™s hoping he never comes back.
