The Gift isn't just Buffy's 100th episode, but also the Season 5 finale AND the finale of the show on The WB, with it moving to UPN (before they eventually merged) for its final two seasons.

The episode directly references the milestone early on, with the usual Previously On segment changed to include a quick montage of just about every previous episode of the show.

Alongside that nice touch, though, the entire episode serves as a reminder of everything Buffy stood for, with Buffy and the Scooby Gang remaining defiant to the very end, overcoming the odds, and saving the world. It has smatterings of humour and Whedon's trademark dialogue, but is also beautifully touching and heartfelt right to the very end. Had the show ended here, it would've been an extremely fitting sign-off, because this episode was, well, a gift.
