The one that started it all.

The Romulans and Cardassians realise that their plan to bombard the Changeling home planet has all been a setup. The Dominion have been expecting the attack and have already evacuated the planet. The onslaught from the fleet is incredible to behold but this was a precursor to the table turn. The elation of victory is snatched away as Star Trek offered up its first, sustained, space battle.

Before this point, the audience had witnessed the odd phaser burst, a volley of torpedoes, or a flashy bit of cloaking to satiate their effects desires. However, In The Die Is Cast, the knob was cranked up to an almighty 11 by 1995 standards.

It isn't the longest battle ever and mainly focuses on the flight of the Defiant through the carnage. The angle remains tight on the escort class ship as it darts in amongst the decimation at speed to rescue Odo and Garak.

Taking a long 6 months to complete, it was, at the time, a work of art and undoubtedly replayed by fans to enjoy this televisual Star Trek treat. In comparison today, it still looks great and demonstrates how much everything has moved on in the subsequent 25 years.

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
