10 Best Action Set-Pieces In Star Trek

8. Destroying The Enterprise; Beyond

JJ Abrams' Kelvin trilogy didn't win over all Trek fans but his films are spectacular nevertheless with the first half an hour of Beyond is no exception. This could have been the Krall versus Kirk finale but if there's one thing the franchise knows how to do, it's blow up an Enterprise.

What makes Beyond so different is the way in which this is executed. As the single body before them explodes into hundreds of swarm ships, viewers know this is going to be an unrivalled scene.

The Enterprise herself goes down with almost no fight as the war engines are ripped off, the deflector dish swiss-cheesed and finally the neck of the ship sliced clean through. Visually it's spectacular and leaves a lump as you watch the Enterprise crumble away.

The battle within is just as frantic as Krall's forces overwhelm the Starfleet crew easily, leaving Uhura to separate the saucer to save Kirk. For pure visual damage this tops even Into Darkness' battering from the Vengeance and is light years from the self-destruct of The Search for Spock. The final plunge of the saucer makes Generations' crash sequence look slightly amateur in retrospect, making fans feel every impact.

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
