10 Best Action Set-Pieces In Star Trek

3. Saving The Universe; Such Sweet Sorrow

Khan Spock
CBS

Discovery's most rewatchable episodes chucked everything including the spore drive into the mix for the conclusion of its second season.

Building up the Red Angel story alongside the rise of Control, it could only go one way and the audience wasn't to be disappointed. Placing the Discovery alongside Pike's reimagined USS Enterprise was an event that filled the screen as the two ships scrambled everything to counter Control.

With more separate ships on screen than the franchise had managed at least on TV, Such Sweet Sorrow guaranteed a huge send off into the future for Discovery. It provided not just a chance to blow a lot of things up on screen but juxtaposed that with Burnham and Spock fully reconciling. Their last conversation together clearly resonates with the Vulcan and is meant as retconned inspiration to explain his adventures through The Original Series to Beyond (pun intended).

As with many on this list, it is a combination of the sustained combat outside the ship as well as the focused events inside that create the spark. Cornwell sacrifices herself for the mission, Georgiou takes down Leland but the crescendo of the Red Angel and Discovery escaping is hard to beat.

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
