10 Best Angel Episodes
7. Soulless
Angel's loss of his soul in Buffy Season Two was a phenomenal twist, and started one of the best story arcs in TV history. So, it's hardly surprising that the writing team decided to unleash Angelus once again. As depraved and cunning as ever, Angel's alter ego may have been unable to awaken any world-swallowing monstrosities while imprisoned, but his talent for cruel mind games meant that he was no less dangerous behind bars.
Angelus' interactions with the team were uncomfortable to watch, as he preyed on their vulnerabilities and came close to murdering Fred. David Boreanaz gave a compelling performance as the twisted vampire, bringing tension and terror to every second of his screentime.
Using Angelus to exacerbate existing tensions was a smart move on the part of the writers, and led to some brilliant character moments. Angelus' manipulations literally brought Wesley and Gunn to blows, and sealed the fate of Fred and Gunn's strained relationship. The revelation that Angel's soul had been stolen and Angelus wasn't going anywhere ended the episode on an ominous note, particularly given Angelus’ frightening confidence that his captivity wouldn’t last much longer.
