Angel's courage and endurance were put to the ultimate test in this nail-biting episode, as he desperately attempted to save the dying Darla. It was unclear how pure his motives were, given how intense his obsession with Darla had become, but his determination to make it through the otherworldly challenges was still awe-inspiring to behold.

The revelation that Angel's incredible achievements and willingness to sacrifice his own life still weren't enough to restore Darla's health thanks to her prior resurrection was truly tragic, and was made all the more so by the fact that his selfless acts had finally changed Darla for the better.

The episode seemed to be coming to a bittersweet ending, with Darla accepting her fate and Angel pledging to remain by her side until the end. But the writers had an even crueller twist in store, as Wolfram and Hart made a sudden intervention with the aid of Drusilla herself, and Darla was sired once again while Angel was forced to helplessly watch.
