10 Best Animated Horror TV Shows Of All Time
4. Castlevania
It must be pretty nice to be Castlevania right now. The show that took Netflix by storm in 2017 must feel like the prettiest girl at the dance as it continues to dazzle 3 seasons into its glorious run.
Based on the iconic Konami video game series (Dracula's Curse if we're being precise), Castlevania is a dark and twisted fantasy about an outcast monster hunter named Trevor, who is tasked by a small village to battle an army of demons that have been summoned by Count Dracula himself.
The show was originally devised as a TV movie by legendary comic book writer Warren Ellis (Preacher), and took a decade to find its final home on Netflix.
In that time it took on many different forms, but would eventually become an unexpected blockbuster TV event when it premiered three years ago, thanks in no small part to its use of stark traditional anime visuals and the kind of dark humour so synonymous with Ellis.
Unlike a lot of anime horror, Castlevania relies on a more traditional villain, breathing new life into the Dracula saga that has been the focus of so many Hollywood movies. Like others before them, the showrunners opt to depict the Count as more of a tragic figure throughout the series, though his penchant for blood soaked violence looms ominously throughout the saga.
It is perhaps this fresh take on a beloved monster that has contributed toward making Castlevania such a well received entry to the genre.
