If you're a horror fan, and you've ever wondered if Tokyo Ghoul was the right anime for you, then you only have to watch the opening sequence of episode one to get your answer.

Tokyo Ghoul, created by Sui Ishida in 2011, tells the story of a young man named Ken Kaneki, whose simple life is turned upside down when he is attacked and almost killed by a creature known as a Ghoul, a flesh-eating creature that roams the streets of Tokyo at night. Due to this incident, Kaneki himself becomes a Ghoul, which brings with it an unquenchable desire for human flesh.

The series is as charming as it is horrifying. Kaneki is your typical easy-going anime high schooler in one breath, and a murderous psychopath in the next.

There are even moments you would be forgiven for forgetting what Tokyo Ghoul is truly about, as Kaneki wonders from frame to frame smiling and speaking in his soft, friendly voice. But that is why the series is so great. It lures you in only to throw you back into reality with a wave of crimson and severed heads.
