Anime is like pornography, you know it when you see it. It's gone from just being animation made in Japan, to more of a general style and animation philosophy. Avatar The Last Airbender is an anime, Voltron: Legendary Defender is an anime, and you bet your ass Castlevania is an anime from head to toe.

This adaptation of the famous Konami video game series is probably the last good choice Konami has made in the last several years, spearheaded by famous comic writer Warren Ellis. And like everything else that Ellis has written, it's dark, bleak, crass, raunchy, gory as all hell, and FREAKING AWESOME!

The animation, done by Frederator Studios and Powerhouse Animation, is crisp, beautiful, and splendidly directed, with characters coming across as solid and human while jumping around and chopping demons into bloody pieces. The characters are also great, with the first three seasons helping us to get invested in a half dozen characters, all going about their own side stories at the same time as one another, which is not easy.

But be warned, like I said, this is a Warren Ellis story. It goes to some dark places, especially in the latest season, and looks to only be upping the ante in the upcoming 4th season. But if that sounds like your jam, then I cannot recommend this show enough.
