3. Devilman Crybaby
After years of working his way up the anime staff totem pole, Masaaki Yuasa is finally getting the recognition he deserves, with shows like Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken and his upcoming adaptation of the famous novel Japan Sinks. And it all began with his reimagining of Go Nagai's horror classic: Devilman Crybaby.
The problem with the original Devilman, as with all of Nagai's more mature work, was that it looked too much like the more kid friendly manga at the time, with soft lines, big eyes, and general 70's manga aesthetic. All adaptations of the work have had to get around this, with Crybaby being by far the most successful. Yuasa's art style is almost too perfectly suited to the insanity of Devilman, with the writing being just as up to par.
Devilman Crybaby is how you adapt a work and keep the original spirit, while also adapting it for modern audiences. Which is to say it's still a grim, bleak look into the abyss of human nature, but now there's Twitter (but I repeat myself).
