10 Best Anime Shows Of The Last Decade
5. Steins;Gate
Like a few of the other examples that have cropped up already, this series gets its charm and appeal from going against what you might typically expect from anime and producing an entirely exceptional experience. Its focus on character relationships, dry humour and a smaller scale makes it more intimate than other shows.
The irreverent tale follows self-proclaimed mad scientist Rintaro Okabe as he and a few of his friends accidentally discover a method of time travel that allows them to send text messages into the past, thereby being able to alter the future. As can be expected, this attracts other interested parties' attention, and a ton of shenanigans ensue.
There is a lot about this series that makes it so compelling, and it's not just limited to the excellent use of science fiction. As previously mentioned, the relationships between the characters are nuanced and dynamic, and it's all brought together by the exciting lead. His over-the-top persona makes him seem unlikeable, yet you cannot help but fall for his devilish arrogance and charming eccentricity.
Additionally, the narrative itself is full of tension and suspense, and although the first half does have some problematic pacing, it eventually picks up and throws you around with plenty of twists and turns.
