6. Buffy Kills Angel

The climax of season two is an emotional one. With soulless Angel transformed into the evil Angelus, Buffy must fight her former lover. Angelus wants to use the stone body of the trapped demon Acathla to destroy the world by swallowing it and sending the entire world to hell.

The stakes were high, and Buffy engaged in a kick-ass sword fight against Angelus, who had removed the sword from the demon's chest and triggered opening the portal. Through this intense battle it becomes clear that Angelus is out to kill Buffy. Any shred of the man she loved is completely gone and no excuses can be made about that.

Eventually, Willow manages to restore Angel's soul and brings him back to his senses. Sadly, it's too late and the portal has started to open. The only way to stop it from unleashing hell, is for Buffy to kill Angel and seal it once more.

It's a devastating end to the battle, knowing that if only Willow had been a moment faster, it might not have gone so badly. Buffy does everything she can to keep the truth from Angel as they share a final moment together, before she tells him to close his eyes and drives the sword through him.

It's by far one of the most heartbreaking moments in Buffy; one that still hurts to this day.
