The Reckoning was a prophecy that foretold an apocalyptic battle which ended with all demons being sent to a hell dimension, and the end of the Slayer line in the 21st Century. This line of Slayers would not be picked up again until the 23rd Century when Melaka Fray would be called.

Melaka was a twin, and while she gained Slayer powers, only her brother Harth had the memories of the Slayer history. He knew everything about the Slayer line and the climactic battle known as The Reckoning.

In this final season, Buffy and the gang go to the future and team up with Melaka Fray one last time. It's there that they learn what really happened during The Reckoning from the one surviving person who remembers: Harmony Kendall.

Harth goes back in time to the 21st Century and tries to manipulate events so that he can assume control of everything. Buffy has one last trick up her sleeve, though. Willow casts a spell to give Buffy all the power from every Slayer, so that she could be strong enough to win the battle. Harth manages to steal the power for himself, but it's too much and ends up slowing him down, allowing Buffy and Fray to finish him off.

The Reckoning was the definitive canon ending to classic Buffy and even managed to tie things up happily! Now, that was a surprise!
