When Tyreese was first introduced to the show, he was probably stereotyped by a lot of viewers as being the rough, no nonsense tough guy. But as always, appearances can be deceiving and his excellently styled beard was actually camouflaging his more sensitive side. It's true that Tyreese made a lot of mistakes and it took him a very long time to get over the anger that boiled to the surface every time he thought about Karen, but he was also one of the most rational, forgiving and caring characters of the group. He forgave Carol after he learned that she was responsible for Karen's death and even looked after Judith, Lizzie and Mika when trying to find Rick and the others. He became a father figure to the girls and a dependable companion for Carol on their journey. Tyreese was a capable fighter and a compassionate friend whose beard always looked on point.
