If you're a fan of Hershel and his beard, you'll be pleased to know that there are Twitter and Facebook pages dedicated to the character's facial hair. Hershel's beard makes him look like Santa Claus, and maybe that's what the producers of the show were going for. Think about it, Hershel was (sob) the oldest member of the group but he was the most optimistic, caring and morally sound person that Rick knew, which is why he went to him for guidance and support. Hershel also loved his family and the children that were staying at the prison endlessly, a lot like Santa who brings kids presents every year. So when the Governor decapitated him, he literally cancelled Christmas forever. Hershel's beard was also a good way to signify time as when the group first arrives at the farm, he doesn't have one. His beard represents how long it has been since he found a home in the prison when his poor farm was over run with walkers.
