10 Best Brooklyn Nine-Nine Episodes
1. The Box
One of the things that Brooklyn Nine-Nine gets right is knowing when to play it simple, as they often approach subjects that restrict the setting and narrative but allow for insightful and hilarious character work. The Box is the best example of the writers taking a straightforward premise and filling it full of character.
In this outing, the focus is on the freaky and suspicious Phillip Davidson, who is played to perfection by Sterling K. Brown. This dentist has been brought in to be interrogated about a murder, and it is evident from the beginning that he knows exactly what buttons to press to aggravate. Holt and Jake work hard to crack him, but tensions rise as he bests them again and again with the clock ticking and the two needing a confession.
The tension of the episode is clear from the offset, as Sterling K. Brown's performance brings an energy that we have never seen in the Nine-Nine. It's cold, calculated and completely contrasts the loud nature of the show.
The compelling act of trying to uncover the truth gives Peralta and Holt some fantastic moments of humour and anger that ultimately generates an enthralling twenty minutes.
It is the best episode because it is simple, features great character development, and feels like a special presence in the series line-up.
