Barney spends the first six seasons believing that is father is The Price is Right host Bob Barker, who's cameo in Season 2 could easily have made this list. Towards the end of Season 6, he meets his actual father, Jerome Whittaker, played by John Lithgow.

Jerry turns out to be the opposite of Barney, as a lame suburban dad who'd rather drink milk than scotch. In a nice twist, Jerry comes to the group for help with impressing Barney. He and Barney finally bond, with a heart to heart during which it's impossible not to cry.

Lithgow brings his A game to the small role. He manages to pack a funny yet dramatic performance into just two episodes, as one of the high points of the season. He returns in Season 9 as a wedding guest, showing just how far his relationship with Barney has come.
