Saturday Night Live alumnus and Nebraska and The Last Man on Earth star Will Forte appears as Randy Wharmpess, Barney's ultra lame co-worker and aspiring brewer, in both Seasons 3 and 6. In Season 3, he acts as Barney's rebound bro in an episode of the same name once Ted "dumps" him. In Season 6, Marshall struggles to fire Randy for his utter incompetence in the episode Canning Randy.

Both appearances by Randy are tragically hilarious, begging the question of how one man can be this lame. From his obvious crush on Robin to his even more obvious way of showing it, Ray quickly became a fan favourite, even though he was only a guest star. He wouldn't be the same character without Forte's effortless charm, or really lack thereof.
