Angel appears in more episodes and seasons than any other character in either show, and his quest for redemption and atonement covers his entire arc. In season one, he was nothing more than the cryptic handsome stranger, occasionally helping Buffy and attempting to prove his worth.

By season two, things really began to heat up. Not only did he and Buffy fall madly in love, but after a night of passion with her, Angel lost his soul and spent the rest of the season tormenting Buffy and her friends. After being killed, the vampire returned in season three, his soul intact and his conscience scarred.

Realising he couldn't be with Buffy, he moved to L.A and, with the help of a former high school mean girl and a charismatic demon, began helping people in hopes that he could regain his humanity and make up for his evil doings. He has a son, takes control of an evil law firm, and loses nearly all of his friends along the way. In the end, he signs away his chance for living a normal life, and gears up for battle, knowing he'll always be needed to fight the big fights.
