10 Best Character Arcs In Shows Produced By Michael Schur
9. Raymond Holt – Brooklyn Nine-Nine
The cold and calculating Captain of the Nine-Nine is not an individual who plays around. Raymond Holt provides a stark contrast to the otherwise goofy and fun-oriented detectives in his command. While he seems immovable, there is much more than meets the eye when considering the Captain.
The Halloween Heist is the first time we see Holt's character challenged. The Captain believes his team’s antics are evidence of their incompetence. He's proven wrong as they work together to win the competition. They demonstrate that they are a great unit, exploits aside, showing Holt there's more than one way to be a good cop.
Over time, Captain Holt becomes very protective of his team, going as far as engaging in corruption to protect officers facing unjust prison time. It’s not just his bravery that grows, but his ability to receive and give love. As an openly gay African American officer of the law, Holt keeps his feelings more to himself than some might. His growing ability to show compassion is never more apparent than when he supported his recently out co-worker, Rosa Diaz. Knowing the struggle she is going through, his kind words comfort the otherwise rigid Rosa.
Whether competing in a heist, planning revenge on his biggest rival, or having a calm and dignified argument with his husband, Captain Holt shows his growth with an open heart. He is also the funniest character on the show, though he certainly doesn’t mean to be.
