10 Best Character Arcs In Shows Produced By Michael Schur
2. Dwight Schrute - The Office
The lovable and unlikeable Dwight Schrute has the best character arc in The Office. When the show began, Dwight was a suck-up, an alarmist, and downright arrogant. While much of that stays the same, we see him transform from a mere assistant, to the regional manager, to an actual manager of Dunder Mifflin.
Dwight often served as a running joke earlier on, but that changes as the show progresses. His loyalty to Michael is childish and viewed as a nuisance by many. He is also devotedly committed to Angela, even temporarily losing his job for her. He loved her through an engagement and a separate marriage. Dwight also gets close to Andy, one of Angela's former fiancé's. His biggest rival and tormentor, Jim, becomes his “bestest mensch” at his wedding. And even though it’s known that Dwight has a soft spot for Pam, it's revealed that he has always considered her to be his best friend.
In time, Dwight got everything he worked so hard to obtain. He did not get it by staying the same, and Dwight had to change and get better. He learned to stop bringing weapons to work, though he does install a steam machine in the office to ward off trespassers. Watching Dwight's evolution makes The Office better with every viewing.
