Sometimes the simplest ideas can be the best and this was definitely the case with The Christmas Lunch Incident. The premise: Geraldine Granger decides to have Christmas Lunch with locals Frank and Jim which gradually snowballs into her accepting invitations to three other banquet-sized feasts in one day.

The Vicar is forced to devour all four Christmas Lunches to avoid offending her parishioners, whether it be accepting a Sprout eating contest with David Horton or eating Owen's tripe-based offering. Alongside the frantic hopping from house to house with gradually less enthusiasm after each meal, Geraldine tackles the looming task of writing the annual Christmas sermon to the biggest audience the church attracts all year.

The episode remains a classic as alongside allowing Dawn French to shine with some physical comedy we get an insight into the homes of some of the most eccentric residents of Dibley. Seeing the chaotic life of Alice and her family (her sister being played by Mel of 'Mel & Sue' fame) and the dysfunctional relationship between father and son David and Hugo Horton is a rare treat we are allowed a glimpse of at Christmas. As much of a classic as it was when broadcast over two decades ago, The Christmas Lunch Incident is an essential - and very relatable - tale of being too polite over the festive period and the consequences of this.

An avid cinephile, love Trainspotting (the film, not the hobby), like watching bad films ironically (The Room, Cats) and hate my over-reliance on brackets (they’re handy for a quick aside though).
