10 Best Community Episodes
7. Studies In Modern Movement
A major part of Community’s strength is the wide variety of ways its cast can be paired up. “Studies In Modern Movement” is an episode which proves that you can split the group up any which way - every cast member has terrific chemistry with everyone else.
It’s not an installment with a great deal at stake - Annie is moving house and has enlisted the group to help her; Jeff has lied his way out of it, and is spending a day at the mall. But the show manages to mine each of the premises for maximum comedy, while furthering the running plots of the season (Annie’s quest for independence, Jeff’s increasing distance from the group).
The pick of the plots is Jeff’s day off. He feigns an illness for a day of indulgence, but is busted by Dean Pelton, who blackmails Jeff into spending the day with him, including lunch at a Mexican restaurant and a karaoke sesh, complete with greenscreen video.
This is Community in its sweet spot - the characters are so well established, written, and acted that you can chuck them into most any situation and more often than not, come out with gold.
