6. Conspiracy Theories And Interior Design
As Community grew and expanded, the show became less interested in the actual premise of the show (disgraced lawyer must regain degree after being caught with fake credentials), but when they wanted to, they could still build a great episode around the Greendale campus.
"Conspiracy Theories and Interior Design" is among the silliest and most delightful school-based episodes in the show’s run. After Jeff is accused of faking a credit for a course on conspiracy theories, his professor vouches for him, earning an apology from Dean Pelton. Only, he really was faking it. Annie, and a reluctant Jeff, wind their way deep into a real life conspiracy that may just go right to the top.
This episode is made by the swerve - or rather, the deluge of swerves. There’s a conspiracy, alright, but it doesn’t become clear who’s conspiring against who until right at the end - the solution is great, nonsensical fun. Coupled with a blanket fort B plot (twee but fun), this is one of the most densely funny and enjoyable episodes in the show’s run. Community was tending towards the grandiose at this point, but this throwback episode simply relies on laughs.
