4. Ozark
Ozark starts out dark, and only gets dark. It’s a story of greed and desperation, in which weak characters make bad decisions and follow them up with even worse ones. Three seasons in, it has become Netflix’s hidden gem, a complex and layered crime drama that only now is starting to find the wide audience it deserves.
Jason Bateman stars as a financial advisor who gets into bed with a Mexican cartel. When things go belly up, he has to relocate his family to rural Missouri, where he finds himself embroiled in a crime ridden town run by warring families. Bateman is best known for his comedy but can conjure up a sinister side quite easily, and puts that edge to great use as an ever evolving, morally compromised protagonist.
Better still is Laura Linney as Bateman’s wife. One of the best actresses of her generation, this may be her finest TV role yet, and her character has been given further screen time with each passing season.
Ozark starts out good but has stepped up its game substantially in the recently released third season. It will surely become one of Netflix’s most talked about shows, which is no more than it deserves.
