5. Money Heist
Money Heist is the biggest sensation you may not have watched. Alex Pina’s Spanish bank robbery drama is Neflix’s most streamed non-English language shows, one of its most watched shows overall, and has turned Pina into a one-man crime drama cottage industry.
It’s not too hard to see why Money Heist has become such a hit: it’s simply a blast. Like most acclaimed crime dramas it ticks the usual boxes of morally ambiguous characters, shades of grey, the odd bit of socio-political commentary, sure.
More to the point, though, it’s riotous, high octane fun. Pina embraces the action side of things more than most crime TV makers (Netflix’s involvement in later seasons have upped the budget substantially, and it’s put to good use). He’s a master stylist, with the crew decked out in Dali-esque masks, giving the show an unbeatable signature look.
It’s unbeatably bingeable TV, absolutely perfect for a Netflix audience, especially one that has become more used to watching content with subtitles. Money Heist is only getting bigger, brasher, and bolder, and in this instance, that’s a good thing.
