4. Midnight Mass - Riley
Wow, a Mike Flanagan project on a horror TV list; who saw that one coming?
Midnight Mass is a compelling piece of TV that is full of tension, plot twists and a slow-burn horror that doesn't patronise you with frequent jump scares. This sense of intimacy and delicacy combined with terror is one of the limited series' biggest selling points and the final moments of this character encapsulates that.
Riley is a troubled man who returns to his home town of Crockett after getting released from prison. He's haunted by the images of the girl he accidentally killed while driving under the influence, not to mention the bizarre supernatural happenings following the arrival of Father Paul Hill.
One saving grace for Riley is being reunited with Erin, a girl he's known since childhood. This comes full circle in his final moments, as he confesses his love to her on a row boat before the rising sun burns him to ashes - a result of supernatural shenanigans.
Part of what makes this moment so brilliant is the juxtaposition between quiet acceptance and ear-gouging grief. As Riley passes, he sees the image of the girl he killed seemingly forgiving him. However, this peaceful farewell is suddenly torn away by the painful, throat-tearing screams of the devastated Erin. It's beautiful and horrible at the same time.
