The original and best Weeping Angels episode, this serves to show just how scary Doctor Who can be when it sets its mind to it (and it helps if it's being written by Steven Moffat, too). The phrase 'hiding behind the sofa' is synonymous with Doctor Who and this is probably the best modern example of the show delivering on its promise. One of the most clever aspects of Doctor Who is the show's ability to take something very ordinary and make it scary and Blink plays on this beautifully with a story about stone statues coming to life. As an introduction to Doctor Who, this episode could work. The protagonist of the story, Sally Sparrow, finds clues left by the Doctor in DVD Easter eggs and is forced to solve the unfolding mystery of the Angels. She learns about the Doctor's world and so would a new viewer to Doctor Who. At the same time, the reason this episode isn't higher is because there isn't much Doctor in it and it doesn't give you a full picture of what this Time Lord hero can do. Still, with a frenzied musical score, terrifying monsters, a brilliant use of timey-wimey time travel, this has all the elements to make this a classic episode and it is sure to win over new fans. The only trouble is, anything they watch after this probably won't be in the same league.
A writer for Whatculture since May 2013, I also write for TheRichest.com and am the TV editor and writer for Thedigitalfix.com . I wrote two plays for the Greater Manchester Horror Fringe in 2013, the first an adaption of Simon Clark's 'Swallowing A Dirty Seed' and my own original sci-fi horror play 'Centurion', which had an 8/10* review from Starburst magazine! I aim to achieve my goal for writing for television (and get my novels published) but in the meantime I'll continue to write about those TV shows I love!
