The Davies-Tennant combo was an absolute delight, that was once more on show in this allegory for our times. 'Gridlock' sees the Doctor showing off to his new companion Martha, taking her to the undercities of New Earth, where she is kidnapped by a couple looking to use the fast lane on the motorway.

In his efforts to save Martha, the Doctor soon finds himself stuck in a never ending traffic jam, while his companion is stuck below in the fast lane, where an evil creature lurks below. The premise of being stuck on a highway forever is one that resonates with the viewer and works as a brilliant stage, yet the episode has so much more to offer.

The reveal of what happened to the citizens of New Earth is a stunning turn of events, while the Face of Boe's final words give viewers of the classic series an indication of what is to come. But it is the Doctor's emotional reveal to Martha of what happened to his people that is the highlight. Tennant delivering the lines with such authenticity and emotion you'd swear he actually did fight in the Time War.
