10 Best Doctor Who Episodes Written By Russell T Davies

8. The End Of Time Part 2

Doctor Who Russell T Davies
BBC Studios

This was the final episode of Who to be penned by Davies, and also signified the end of the Tennant era. It proved to be a wonderful victory lap for the writer and actor, as the story threads and characters introduced by Davies were all given a fond farewell.

The main plot sees head Time Lord Rassilon plotting Gallifrey's return from the depths of the Time War, while The Master's role in the grand scheme is revealed. While the final climatic battle between Rassilon, The Master, and The Doctor is extremely effective, it is the Doctor's final moments and the reveal of what the "he will knock four times" prophecy represents that moves this episode into classic territory.

The reveal of poor old Wilf being the accidental cause of the Doctor's need to regenerate is heartbreaking, but the viewer is subsequently 'rewarded' with a visit to all our favourite companions. Glimpses of Martha, Mickey, Captain Jack, and Wilf are all tearjerkers, but it's the Doctor's trip to visit Rose Tyler that really pulls the heartstrings.

The episode crams a lot in without ever feeling rushed, proving an excellent stand alone adventure, a fitting end for Tennant, and a celebration of all the wonderful journeys we'd been on under Davies' watch.
