Speaking of longest-running companions, they don't come much more long-running than Jamie McCrimmon, the Scottish Highlander, who travelled with the Second Doctor in nearly all of his adventures. While the Doctor's male companions are usually secondary to their female counterparts, Jamie was the Doctor's best friend while other companions like Victoria and Zoe came and went. This being the sixties, though, they needed a main character in a short skirt so Jamie was rarely seen without his kilt. From the 1700s, Jamie understood little of the science he encountered with the Doctor (once calling an aeroplane a 'flying beastie') but he was a fast learner all the same. In many ways, Jamie was the Doctor's perfect companion - brave, intelligent and loyal. In fact, Jamie was so loyal he only left the Doctor when the Time Lords wiped his memory and sent him back to his own time. Jamie is one of the most loved of the Doctor's companions and so has cast a long shadow over the show. He returned in both the Five Doctors, for the show's 25th anniversary, and in the Two Doctors, just for the hell of it. Perhaps now that the show has a proudly Scottish Doctor, the time is ripe for Jamie to return once again...
